Behavioral disorders in childhood, Child psychology

Child psychology, Increase in number of emotional and developmental disorders in children is a growing concern.

All children misbehave sometimes or get impulsive without any exception. When this goes to extreme and disrupts socially or culturally it will be considered as behavioral disorder.

Misconduct of children may cause stress in their families, schools and communities. Depending on the age of a child, parents and psychologists can decide if that behavior is normal to kid’s age or personality. Usually at the earlier stage, parents try to change their child’s behavior either by punishing or by ignoring.

But punishing has a drawback as it does not get rid of the conduct completely instead the child just chooses not to commit the bad behavior and may return back later. If the unusual conduct or habits continue parents may have to consider psychotherapy for their kid.

It is important to get the treatment for the behavioral disorder in children because otherwise they will grow up as dysfunctional adults. Through psychotherapy for children they will be able to find the emotional support, solutions for conflicts with people in their surrounding, also better self esteem and anxiety treatment.

Signs of behavior disorder in children are: Causing harm to people or pets and damaging property, stealing, skipping school, frequent arguments and lying, early sexual activities or tendency to smoke, drugs, rebellion, depression or anxiety.

Child psychologists or children’s psychiatrists will be able to provide the answer and support needed for the child and parents. Behavioral disorder in children can cause severe damage on children’s overall health as well as emotional distress to their parents.

Below is a list of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders found in kids and young children during early stages of adolescence:-

Learning disorders: Children with learning disabilities at the earlier stages are generally accused of not paying attention, of not trying harder or of not being motivated.

But the fact is they cannot do all of these on their own. Clearly they are not less intelligent instead it is the disorder in their brain to take the information and process it properly, causing the problem.

They need early intervention from child psychologist and loving support from their parents.

Autism: It is a developmental disorder, starts at the early childhood of 12-18 months though gets noticed usually when child starts going to pre-school.

The symptoms are inability of social interaction, verbal or non- verbal communication problems and lack of interest in external world around them.

The diagnosis of autism is only through clinical judgment and observations through pediatricians and children’s psychologists. Autism treatment and support is a long term commitment. The medication for autism consists of treatment for seizures and emotional problems.

Eating disorders: Though they sound not so serious, eating disorders may prove to be life threatening to kids and teenagers. There are three eating conditions which are considered as disorders: Anorexia – Where the child or teen refuses to eat or consume enough calories with a fear of becoming fat.

Bulimia – Where the child disgustingly overeats. Binge eating – Rapid eating. Eating disorders usually start at early adulthood although children may get affected too.

The causes for eating disorders tend to be biological, social or emotional. These may be a signal to even severe underlying problem. It is advisable to take the psychotherapy treatment at the early stage.

Depression or anxiety: Moodiness is not depression but sadness which doesn’t go away even after couple of weeks is depression. In kids depression and anxiety go hand in hand. In kids it is usually anxiety whereas in pre-teens depression as well as anxiety disorders both can happen.

These are harmful to their brains and taking professional help of child psychologists or psychiatrists is very important to help them and support in their distress during anxiety treatment or depression treatment.

Sometimes it becomes tough to recognize signals of these disorders at the early stage. As parents go with your intuition, get tuned into your kid, this can help you to provide the child with best support throughout the bad phase with the help of psychologists or psychiatrists.
